Reefer breakdown

Pays for temperature-controlled freight that spoils because your refrigeration unit suddenly failed.

Requirement

Added to a motor truck cargo policy as an endorsement. Some policies require proof of recent reefer unit maintenance.

What it pays for

  • Spoiled produce, meat, dairy, or pharmaceuticals after a sudden reefer failure
  • Loss from the unit breaking down mechanically while the load is in your care

What it leaves out

  • Spoilage from running out of fuel or setting the wrong temperature, on most policies
  • Repairs to the reefer unit itself
  • Loads your cargo policy already excludes

Who needs it

Any carrier running a reefer trailer. Without it, a standard cargo policy usually will not pay for spoilage.

Common questions

Doesn't my cargo policy already cover spoiled loads?

Usually not. Most cargo policies exclude spoilage from mechanical breakdown unless you add reefer breakdown.
