Motor truck cargo
Pays for the freight on your trailer if it is damaged, destroyed, or stolen while in your care.
Requirement
Not federally required for most general freight. Brokers commonly ask for $100,000; high-value loads can need $250,000 or more. Household goods movers must file a BMC-34.

What it pays for
- Freight damaged in a collision or rollover
- Loads lost to fire, flood, or theft, as listed in your policy
- Debris removal after a covered loss, on most policies
What it leaves out
- Spoilage from a reefer unit failing, unless you add reefer breakdown
- Commodities your policy excludes, which often include electronics, alcohol, or livestock
- Theft from an unattended truck, on many policies
Who needs it
Any carrier hauling freight for brokers or shippers. Most load boards and broker contracts require it.
Common questions
How much cargo coverage do I need?
Match the most valuable load you regularly haul, then check your broker contracts. $100,000 is the usual starting point.
Does cargo insurance cover every type of freight?
No. Each policy lists excluded commodities. Tell us what you haul and we will check the exclusions before you bind.
