General liability
Covers business risks that have nothing to do with driving, like an injury at your yard or damage at a customer's dock.
Requirement
Not federally required. Many shippers, warehouses, and ports require $1,000,000 per occurrence before they let you on site.

What it pays for
- Someone slipping and getting hurt at your office, yard, or shop
- Damage you cause at a customer's site while loading or unloading, when it is not caused by driving
- Claims of advertising injury, such as libel, on most policies
What it leaves out
- Anything that happens while driving (that is auto liability)
- Your own employees' injuries (that is workers' compensation)
- Damage to freight (that is cargo)
Who needs it
Carriers with a yard, office, or shop, and anyone whose shippers or receivers ask for a certificate showing general liability.
Common questions
Why do I need general liability if I already have auto liability?
Auto liability only applies to accidents involving your vehicle. General liability covers the rest of your business: your premises and your work at customer sites.
